DEVULCANISING RUBBER

Devulcanising rubber

ReUse s.r.l. also carries out rubber devulcanising processes, which are based on breaking the chemical bonds between polymer chains and sulphur – created during the vulcanisation process – that lend rubber its sought-after properties of elasticity and mechanical resistance.

Until not too long ago, rubber vulcanisation was considered an irreversible process, but recently things have changed significantly. ReUse s.r.l. is able to devulcanise rubber using a number of different systems, based on the characteristics and the requirements of the polymer to be devulcanised. The two principal processes are as follows:

  • High-shear mixing: a 100% green technological process, without chemical additives, capable of breaking the bonds between the macromolecular chains without damaging them, in contrast to what happens when using shredding techniques;
  • Using water vapour and shredding: this method may be used to recover the devulcanised material as scrap – and hence used in the region of 10-20% – thereby reincorporating quantities comparable to the scrap rate generated by the process, without affecting the characteristics of the rubber compounds.

Thanks to ReUse s.r.l., channels, rubber cut-offs and other production scrap no longer constitute waste material, but raw materials that can be reintegrated directly into the production process.
